The life of a book

The life of a book

A book is an amazing thing. It can live many years, sometimes decades or centuries beyond the life of the author. If written for The Lord it becomes a vehicle for change in those we never meet. It may travel next door or around  the world.

The joy of writing

Imagine getting paid for something you love to do. Something you would do for free. This how I view writing. I love giving away books. To know someone is reading the story

I quit!

I quit!

How many times as an author, have you quit? In the beginning, you struggled over your manuscript writing and rewriting. You just could not find the right tempo. Then one glorious day it all came together. Your idea became a story. You breathed life into your characters. You continued to write adding new features. Soon they became real, as real to you as your next-door neighbor. You met with them daily you shared their joys their sorrows

One of the greatest gifts God gives to a fiction writer is an imagination. With it, He enables us to observe shootouts, car chases, births and deaths. To solve mysteries and relate these events to others. We weave stories together with the joys and sorrows of life. We experience the horror of losing a love one. The elation of falling in love, the conflict of everyday life. We sit at our computer and create new worlds and populate it with our characters.

The Timex Author

The Timex Author

Many years ago the Timex watch company produced commercials featuring their timepieces. In these ads a watch would be subjected to torturous test. Taped to a baseball bat shot through glass or various other trials. At the end, a camera zoomed in on the watch to prove it was still running. ‘It took a licking and kept on ticking’ become the motto for the Timex company.

The thread that runs so true

The thread that runs so true

Some of the best novels I read were confusing in the beginning. They seemed to be disjointed. They started in different locations perhaps years or generations apart. The characters appeared to have no relationship to each other. If this is a new author or an unfamiliar one you may be tempted to put the book aside. Yet you persist. You wade through the pages wondering where the author is going. What was the writer thinking as he or she wrote this narrative’

Paper Dolls

Paper Dolls
Nov 17, 2018 by Darrell Case
Remember when you, your sister or a friend played with paper dolls? Even though the dolls’ clothes would change depending on their activity, their expression always remained the same. They stayed happy, smiling no matter what. They were never worried, sad or fearful. They were fun and easy to play with. No sorrow affected them. No tragedy touched them. You could leave a paper doll for a day, a month or a year. When you returned to play with them again, they had the same expression. Sometimes we as writers have a problem creating believable characters. Despite our efforts, they will simply lie flat on the page like paper dolls, projecting no depth or relataible feelings.

We have a tenancy to believe when a person reaches a certain age they are useless. They are no longer productive. Consequently in their field of expertise they should retire and let a younger person take their place.
